Bathtub refinishing is so much more than painting a bathtub. When refinishing a bathtub, you need a very durable surface. You want a surface that is immersion rated, can withstand scrubbing and chemicals.
You also want a surface that is going to bond. Not just bond, but form a weld between the old and new. So many times I have been called out to refinish a bathtub that was only refinished a few months earlier. The failure usually occurs because of the water and surface temerature fluctuations forming condensation under the painted surface. Once this condensation starts it will peel the new surface away in sheets. There is a huge difference between making a bathtub look good for a picture, and making it look good and last under use.

Prepping the surface by sanding, etching and cleaning is called a mechanical bond. The purpose of doing this is to create a clean surface, but also to create a surface that has some "bite", this gives the new surface something to latch onto. This is why you will hear professional bathtub refinishing technicians speak about etching the old surface. It is also equally important to have a chemical bond. A chemical bond is achieved through a molecular bonding process. Part of the process is silane coupling agent. Dentist use silane to bond dental work, the aerospace Industry uses silane to bond the coating they use to high altitude aircraft. Silane coupling agent creates a chemical weld because it is activated by moisture. Water is the catalyst for silane, which makes sense why its a great chemical weld for the Dental, Aerospace and Refinishing Industries. This high quality silane will catalyze from the formation of condensation and lock down the new surface or repair.

I would never accept a job, if I were out of silane. However, at about $175 / quart you can see why it's very tempting for low quality refinishing technicians to bypass this important step. The truth is, it's clear, it dries in about 5 minutes and the customer would have no clue it was not used, until the surface began peeling away in huge sheets weeks later. Not only is the manual and chemical bonding a must for the new surface but the new surface needs to be the correct film thickness. You can toss a can of paint and a roller in your car and call yourself a bathtub refinishing technician. The sad part about that statement is so house painters do exactly that. It has happened 3 times (that I know of) in my service area. When the bathtubs peel in sheets they never question the supplies or the process, most will blame the Industry. The truth is they DIY kit is a asking for trouble. In fact, I personally use a polyester liquid porcelain. This surface is made specifically for Dallas bathtub refinishing. If those kits worked I would save about $200 per tub in my cost. However, I would never purchase any of those kits to use on a job.
